Guest Post : Creating Great Workspaces by Joanna at Design Shuffle

Good Morning! Today I bring you a guest post from Joanna at Design Shuffle. She has some great workspace ideas for you fellow crafters and DIY-ers. Enjoy!

Hello! My name is Joanna. I’m a writer for Design Shuffle, a wonderful social networking community that brings together interior designers and those who love to follow their work. Luckily, as part of my writing I get to spend my days searching for and gathering decorating ideas and images. I love to share them with blog readers like you on design blogs such as The Gold Jelly Bean.

If you’re a crafter, then you know having a place to work and keep your supplies is a necessity. This can be accomplished by turning a spare bedroom or office into your dream workspace or by using a corner of the kitchen or dining room to spread your wings. There is something thrilling about seeing your supplies organized and at the ready for the next big project. These are some of my favorite workspaces wonders. Thanks for letting me share today!

Making Use of an Old Typewriter

This weekend Sydney felt inspired, and created several great masterpieces. After all her hard work, finger painting till her hands could paint no more, we couldn’t store her artwork away in a drawer. And a basic frame just wouldn’t do. So we put a couple old typewriters to use, displaying her artwork in a non-traditional manner. Continue reading

DIY Faux Tin Tile Backsplash

Today I bring you a quick kitchen update. This space was feeling cluttered and dated, and there were several grease spots on the wall behind the stove and sink. The solution? A fresh coat of gray paint to brighten the space, and a tin tile styled backsplash. To get the look of tin tile, we purchased this faux version here. Continue reading

Bringing New Life to an Old Lamp

We have a few high quality old brass lamps in our place. I love them, they are classic and can go with pretty much any style. When we first acquired this lamp, we gave it a fresh coat of glossy black paint which went well against the white walls in our last apartment. But, once it was moved to it’s new home in our current hallway, it got lost against the charcoal walls. I wanted it to be shiny and gold again, but finding that original metal underneath the black was not an option. I love gold spray paint, however it just wouldn’t look right on this lamp. It would be too similar to the original finish, but not quite there. So, I decided to go for another metallic spray paint finish. Continue reading

Fabric Bins, Keeping Sydney Organized

The latest addition to Sydney’s room, fun fabric bins. I found these basic fabric boxes for just $4.99 from Ikea. With some fabric scraps, contrasting thread, fabric glue, and a little creativity I personalized the boxes for our daughters room. It’s a fun way to store toys and stay organized. Sydney knows that baby dolls are in the ‘s’ box, dress up in the ‘y’, etc. I created stencils from paper before cutting the fabric. Then used a sewing machine to outline each letter with contrasting thread. Each letter was then adhered to the boxes with fabric glue.

Eclectic China

I wanted to register for china for our wedding, but we ended up going the Crate and Barrel route instead. And then of course a year, and a couple broken dishes later, the stores stopped carrying our set. You can get them through special order, but what a fuss. So when we moved and needed more dishes, I changed up our set. Between thrift stores and hand-me-downs, we now have a mix of fun china and great basics. Do they match? Well, no… not in the traditional sense. But they do all work together. And the best part? If something breaks, its easily replaceable. Continue reading

DIY Creative Jewelry Storage

When it came time to decorate our bathroom, I got stuck deciding what to do for artwork. I was also in the middle of figuring out where to store all my jewelry so it was easily accessible. Then it dawned on me. Why not make my jewelry the artwork? Continue reading

DIY Horse Roundup

Our daughters room is still a work in progress, but this weekend we made some headway. We found 7 molded plastic horses at a local flea market and couldn’t pass them up! After getting them home and having a long debate on where they should go, we decided they would be most fun in a child’s room. They have been sitting around for awhile, and this weekend we finally cleaned them up, painted them, and installed them in their new home. Continue reading

Promoting Creativity

It can be hard for a two year old to remain patient while plastic and newspapers are taped to the dining room table in preparation for a painting session. Or while supplies are gathered for the afternoon craft. So I decided my daughter needed a creative space of her own. A place where she can sit down and have craft options ready to go. No preparation required. So now she has her own desk set up in our living room / dining room. And if I need to get a little work done at my desk during the day, she can do the same. Continue reading

Making our Apartment a Home.

My husband and I have always been big city people, and we actually used to enjoy moving. We first met in Chicago, where we only spent a year at each apartment we rented. When we moved to California we did the same. But once Sydney came along, we finally renewed a lease. So when we moved back to Chicago last year, we decided it was time to find a place where we could get comfortable and stay awhile. Once we found apartment we loved, the next step was to make it feel like a home. Continue reading

Easy DIY Solution for an Unsightly Fuse Box

We have a fuse box right in the middle of one of the walls in our office alcove. It drives me crazy, so I thought about hanging something over it to completely hide it. Then I decided, why hide it if I can make it into something useful and fun to look at instead. So I gathered some pictures and magnets, and this is what I came up with…. Continue reading
